Focus on Science

Focus on Science: Enriching our children's lives, one experiment at a time ...

Did you know what the States of Matter were at age 6?

Did you know what a solute, solvent, solution and precipitate were at age 10?

Could you explain basic physics at age 7?

Our kids do and our kids can.

Our extraordinary and enthusiastic Science instructor, Lori Belateche, has taught science at Carpenter for six years and has turned the science lab into one of the hottest places to be on campus. Mrs. Belateche holds a B.S. in Geology from the College of William and Mary. After graduating, she worked in the environmental and engineering field for over 15 years. Prior to joining Carpenter's enrichment staff, Mrs. Belateche worked with the Curator at The Griffith Observatory to design the 5th grade field trip to the Observatory to adhere to the 5th grade science content standards.

Mrs. Belateche provides our children with engaging hands-on experiments and learning that complement their science textbooks. Each grade studies all three types of science each year: Life, Earth and Physical Science. Mrs. Belateche helps the students make connections from year to year so they have a strong foundation on which to build their future scientific education. This year, 92% of the 5th graders tested at the Proficient or Advanced level in science! Here is an inside view of just some of what your child might be learning in Science Lab::

  • Kindergarten : Trees, Wood and Paper, Animals (including fish, snails, worms, isopods, ladybugs and more)
  • First Grade : State of Matter, Air and Weather, Plants and Insects
  • Second Grade : Pebbles, Sand and Silt, Insects and Plants, Balance and Motion
  • Third Grade : Solar System, Matter and Energy, Living Systems
  • Fourth Grade : Magnetism and Electricity, Rocks and Minerals, Environments
  • Fifth Grade : Body Systems, Weather and Planetary Science, Mixtures and Solutions

Carl Sagan said, "We live in a highly technical society, a society in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology." Mrs. Belateche believes, "By getting kids excited and involved with science early on in their education, I think we can turn that around. Science is a natural fit for children. All children want to find out why. Why is the sky blue? What makes the root grow down and the stem grow up? How does a light bulb create light? These and many more questions are answered in the science lab everyday -- by the children themselves! They learn how to ask the questions and how to find the answers through the scientific method and observations."

At Carpenter, our mission is to educate the whole-child, and through superb enrichment classes such as our Science Lab, we give our children the best education possible.
