Carpenter's Green Team drafted an outline of suggestions in the form of a Sustainability Resolution (a document summarizing our goals, vision and mission) on how to make Carpenter one of the greenest schools in LAUSD. We have included what we believe is important to the school and the community but we want YOUR feedback! What do you think is most important when it comes to making Carpenter a more environmentally friendly school? We want to know what matters to you.

Carpenter Community Charter’s Sustainability Resolution
 
Vision
 
  • Carpenter Community Charter (CCC) is committed to becoming one of the most sustainable schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District by advancing its' children’s health, prosperity, and environmental stewardship.
  • The goal is to make Carpenter Community Charter as one of the Greenest school’s in the Country.
 
Mission
 
  • EDUCATE – The Green Team will educate and encourage leadership in environmental stewardship by engaging children, parents, teachers, staff and the community as a whole in an effort to reduce our environmental impact.
  • TRANSFORM – The Green Team will help students, parents, teachers, and staff to transform our school into a model of environmental sustainability by establishing and maintaining effective and permanent waste reduction, energy conservation and ecological preservation programs.
  • INSPIRE – The Green Team will assure that Carpenter Community Charter is inclusive and together with the Studio City community will forge a model for integrated sustainability that will be recognized for its combined efforts and achievements.
 
Carpenter Community Charter’s vision, mission and programs are inspired by and will build on the Los Angeles Unified School District Sustainability Guidelines & Initiatives.
 
1. Educate – designate an interactive web page from the main CCC navigation menu; promote sustainability in the curriculum, introduce Choose your D.O.T. program to students (D.O.T. = Do One Thing for your personal sustainability practice), community outreach, schedule guest speakers or green workshops and, Active Lifestyle – promote walk to school and exercise. Healthy Food & Nutrition – promote the benefits of organic and locally grown food. Social Responsibility – encourage community engagement and leadership.
 
2. Garden & Habitat Preservation – promote, plan and maintain greening projects at school and in the community. Landscape – compost yard trimmings, xeriscape (drought tolerant) & naturescape (native/adaptive) plantings, and embark upon challenge projects that include creating more permeable surfaces for storm water conservation.
 
3. Increase Renewable Energy – aim for challenge projects such as solar panels above lunch table shade structures if feasible.
 
4. Procurement – aim for purchase of environmentally safe supplies & materials (Environmentally Preferable Purchasing or EPP). Reduce Toxicity – aim for increased use of green cleaning supplies, eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers, and pesticides.
 
5. Reduce Energy Use – reduce energy use by 10% 2012, energy conservation education through School Conservation Program (SCP), measure, manage and set goals. Reduce Heat Island effect – aim for challenge projects to maximize opportunities for shade or a project to ensure all roofs are painted white if feasible (high solar reflective index).
 
6. Reduce Water Use – reduce water use 10% by 2012, water conservation education through SCP, measure, manage and set goals. Installation of smart weather based irrigation controllers, use drought resistant/tolerant plants.
 
7. School Conservation Program (SCP) – the ability to share in a portion of the utility bill savings from our on-site conservation efforts.
 
8. Sustainable Design Standards at facilities will follow LAUSD continued use of Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and High Priority Schools (HPS) with any new construction (or improvements) to a standard of 20% better than Title 24. Air Quality – improve indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency, provide operable windows, use of non-volatile organic compounds in paints and cleaning supplies.
 
9. Zero Waste Campus by 2020 beginning with increased recycling by 25%, reduce waste by diverting recyclables for both redemption value (bottles and cans) and for regular recycling. Green Events – promote recycling awareness and teach waste diversion by collecting recyclables, compost, and trash.
